Il y a
(2008)
performance, flag (100 x 163 cm) , framed c-print (35 x 24 cm)

“Il y a” is a work in two parts. First part was a performance realized in Paris, France (11th of june 2008). I walked thru a street, holding a flag with a logo resembling that of one well-known furniture company. In the second part of the work, a documentation photograph of the performance and the flag were exhibited in gallery.

"Il y a" ("there is") is a philosophical term which Emmanuel Levinas (among others) has defined for example like this: "The phenomenon of ’impersonal being’, ’horrible neutrality’ / Existence without existents. /Bare existence... full of nothingness of everything... / It is like a density of void, like a murmur of silence. There is nothing, but there is a being, like a field of forces." - Levinas: "Existence & Existents" (1947)
